Nick Sawyer, MD, MBA is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and associate professor with deep expertise at the intersection of medicine, business, policy, and law. His clinical career has been driven by a passion for providing high-quality emergency care to adults and children, and his parallel commitment to education and mentorship led him to a successful career in academic medicine.

 

Dr. Sawyer earned his Bachelor’s degree in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior from UC Davis, followed by a combined MD/MBA from the University of California, Irvine. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. For eight years, he served as a full-time clinical instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Davis School of Medicine, ultimately reaching the academic rank of Associate Professor.

 

A respected health policy expert, Dr. Sawyer has served on the Board of Directors of the California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and directed the UC Davis Emergency Medicine Health Policy Fellowship. He also led curricular development for Health Systems Science at the UC Davis School of Medicine. His academic work focuses on U.S. healthcare economics, the political and structural determinants of health, and strategies to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse in the healthcare system.

 

Dr. Sawyer’s policy interests have increasingly intersected with the legal realm, particularly medico-legal issues and state medical practice act law. Known for his precision, strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, and emotional intelligence, Dr. Sawyer brings a principled and evidence-based approach to his expert witness work, making him a valuable and credible asset to any legal team.
